We started our 2017 competition schedule this past Sunday, February 26, 2017 at the 2017 Winter Burn Off in Des Plaines, IL at River Rand Bowl. We competed in 4 categories; sausage, chicken, ribs, and pork tenderloin.
This event Scott was not able to make it due to other commitments, but our Honorary Team Member Joe, stepped in and help out a lot. We also had help from others who stopped by to say hello and got stuck working, so we weren’t up the creek.
The weather wasn’t too cold but the wind was crazy on Sunday. Our tent kept blowing around even through it was weighted down. So Joe decided to tie the tent to the truck. That was a great idea and the tent never moved again. The tent next to us folded onto itself and was destroyed. After a few hours, our tent started to break and bend, so we had to scrap the tent and throw it away after we tried to keep it together with tape and zip ties.
Even with all the wind, we were able to get our food cooked, our boxes together, and everything turned in on time.
Around 4:30pm, the results came in. We placed 12th in sausage, 2nd in chicken, 4th in ribs, and 1st in tenderloin. We also were the Reserve Champions. That is nuts, we were the 2nd best team overall against a lot of great teams. Sunday was our day.
I want to give a shot out and thanks to our sponsors; Pit Barrel Cooker, Kelly Graves Design, Veteran Beer Company, and Elite Embroidery.
